St. Anthonys High School
1860s after the revolt of 1857 Catholics in Calcutta organized themselves and formed communities. St Josephs Chapel is the outcome of this period. 1863 Fr H Everard a Jesuit priest of St Xaviers bought a plot from a certain Mr Freytas (or Freyton) from a collection of Rs 3536. A chapel was built there for a community of about 900 Catholic Tamilians for their religious guidance and in times of sickness and burial. To cater to their educational needs Fr Everard started a small school attached to the chapel. 1865 March 19 on the day of the Feast of St Joseph the chapel was blessed by Vicar Apostolic Msgr. Auguste Van Heule. 1907 Fr Camille Limbourg in charge of St Josephs Chapel paid more attention to the small primary school attached to the chapel. 1916 January 16 Fr Limbourg with the assistance of his superiors upgraded the primary school to secondary for poor Indian Catholic boys. It was during the First World War so the school had only 18 students attending. The year saw the establishment of the novena of Our Lady of Vailankanni in St Josephs Chapel at the initiative of the Tamilian marine workers and other devoted patrons of the shrine. 1917 a boarding was opened 1918 at the end of First World War the old structure of the school was destroyed and a new school building was built. St Anthonys High School had 160 students and nine teachers. 1919 the school started sending candidates for the Matric examinations 1920 Fr Limbourg added three floors to the school building for benefit of boys in and around Calcutta.
